Already out of the knockout competitions, Russ would have to wait for the new season to bare his charges’ ‘Cup King Mentality’ for all to see. Ten wins in the cups would cause a fixture backlog. Finishing a place higher in seventh, and just five points off the slot to extend the season by a couple of weeks. Four points shy the following season. Again finishing the season in seventh, Trinity under Wilcox have improved year on year. Agonisingly falling just short in
the league.
This season the play-off spots drop down to that seventh spot. Could it be a case of third time lucky for the ex Scunthorpe United defender, coach and manager?
During his two full seasons, two remarkable Emirates FA Cup campaigns have helped to put Gainsborough back on the map. Roaring back from late home heartbreak against higher ranked opposition, to obliterating the same opposition three days later in their own back yard. Beating Boston United 4-0, in their new stadium. Going on to reach the First Round Proper & inspiring the most dramatic of comebacks, both from three nil down and trailing 4-3 in extra time to emerge victorious, against Hednesford. Securing a Second Round Proper place for the first time in 72 years. A trip to Harrogate Town was the prize, in front of the BBC cameras. World wide attention saw Trinity narrowly beaten by a goal to nil.
Some say lightening doesn’t strike twice. But try telling that to Russ & his group. Late heartache at home to Hartlepool, set up a replay up in the North East. And a Fraser Preston double, and Sisa Tuntulwana wonder goal saw the Holy Blues through to face Accrington Stanley live on TNT. A first televised home clash for our little Lincolnshire town.
And if Emirates FA Cup successes weren’t enough, seeing the boss beamed live across the world on the worldwide feed – promoting our team, our town, our division with calm, professionalism, he masterminded runs in the FA Trophy, reaching the last sixteen, having dispatched the likes of Rushall Olympic, Chester & York City. All sides from higher divisions, to have people sitting up and taking note.
Discovering talent that has stepped up levels. The likes of Declan Howe, Will Lancaster & the aforementioned Tuntulwana – all who have flourished having spent big parts of their formative years under the guidance of Russ Wilcox. Not to mention the likes of George Hornshaw and Lewis Butroid, who have blossomed under Russ’ watch.
Fostering a togetherness. A core of players proud to pull on the blue shirts of Gainsborough Trinity. A number of Trinity centurions, that understand and respect the boss, his principles – and what his teams look like.
Now, as Russ looks to embark on his fourth year at the club, we reflect on 148 games, a 49% win ratio, some fascinating tales & hope that he can continue weaving his magical tales, for many years to come.
