Sisa Tuntulwana partnered Will Lancaster at the heart of the Trinity defence, flanked by Aaron Simpson and Ashley Jackson. George Hornshaw, back from holiday, alongside Jacob McLoughlin provided the midfield pivot, with Lewis Butroid and Javelle Clarke on the flanks. Jonny Margetts and Frank Mulhern starting up top together. A couple of trialists started on the bench, alongside young 'keeper, Ollie Sykes - and experienced duo Fraser Preston and Bobby Johnson. As a preca
ution, Durose & Helliwell sat this one out. Adam Crookes was part of the travelling party, but wasn't risked, while Harrison Beeden was absent from the squad to face one of his former clubs.
Both sides struggled to get into a rhythm, on a very lively Heffernan Utility Stadium surface. Margetts was enjoying a battle with the Brighouse centre half, while Mulhern was dropping deep, looking to find pockets. And mix up the style and tenacity we looked to play with. Just past the midway point of the first half, Clarke was sent clear. But as he looked to capitalise on some absent defending, he couldn't lift his finish over the top of the 'keeper. The ball dropping narrowly over the 'keepers crossbar,
On 33 minutes, Clarke did have the breakthrough. Needing two bites at the cherry after Frank Mulhern was given too much time and space to chip a ball into the box. He picked out Margetts, who controlled the ball for Clarke, and on the stretch, he converted past the Brighouse 'keeper, to open the scoring.
Brighouse did have the ball in the net shortly after Trinity took the lead, but the effort was ruled out for offside, before good play from Jordan Preston, the focal point of the hosts' attack, presented a glorious opportunity for the oranges to equalise, but the attempt didn't trouble David Robson between the sticks.
Half Time: Brighouse Town 0 Gainsborough Trinity 1
Trinity looked a little more comfortable in the second half, as the pitch continued to prove tricky for both sides. After a slick Gainsborough move, Margetts fired a yard wide of the target. Margetts was then played in as the Trialist left winger chested down for the experienced front man.
Eighteen minutes from time, the Holy Blues did have a second, and Margetts had his goal. A neat move finished off, with a curled finish out of reach of the home goalkeeper.
The final throes of the game saw Fraser Preston fizz a thirty yard freekick just wide of the upright, as the final whistle blew to signal the end of another good work out for Russ Wilcox's charges.
Now we are down to the final game, before the Pitching In Northern Premier League, Premier Division curtain raiser on Saturday 9th August. That final game pits the Holy Blues against a Barnsley XI, with spots for a starting place in Russ' opening match day squad! Who has caught your eye so far in pre-season?
