Inside the opening two minutes, Trinity fashioned the first chance of the game, top scorer Dec Howe fashioning a chance, getting a shot away on the right apex of box that forced visiting ‘keeper and Assistant Manager, Saul Deeney into a comfortable save.
But it would be Basford who would take the early lead, when Academy Graduate, Joe Uvegas opened his account for the visitors. Finding himself unmarked in the box, he was able to finish high into the roof of the net. A calm finished from the Ambers’ teenager. Bailey Conway immediately tried his luck, to get the Blues back on term straight from the kick off, but he saw his effort roll wide of the near post.
A poor clearance gave Jordan Hallam the chance to double the Basford lead, but his effort from the edge of the box was narrowly up and over the angle of post and bar. A let off for the Holy Blues. Fraser Preston & Howe then linked up well to set up birthday boy, Lewis Butroid free on goal. But he saw his effort deflected behind for a corner, a corner that came to nothing.
Trinity were winning a number of corners, but were unable to get any real telling connections that would truly trouble Deeney’s goal. A scuffed Butroid effort inadvertently found Will Lancaster who headed back across goal to Preston. He too seeing his effort comfortably stopped.
Joe Uvegas doubled his and Basfor
d’s tally as he raced through on goal and finished through the legs of Wharton and into back of the net. Again, the Gainsborough forward momentum tried to react. Howe racing through on goal and looking to hit his effort with the outside of his right boot. Deeney was equal to the effort, turning the ball behind for another corner. Butroid shooting over crossbar, before at the other end, Tyler Dacres made it three for Basford. He lashed his effort into the roof of the net from just inside the area, to truly stun the home support.
Half Time: Gainsborough Trinity 0-3 Basford United
Wilcox rang the changes at the break, making a trio of Trinity changes. On came Aaron Braithwaite, Joe Stacey and Jordan Helliwell for Aaron Simpson, Lewis Butroid and Bobby Johnson.
Eight minutes into the second period, and Howe looked to make things happen, a mazy run through on goal, only to see his effort deflect wide of the near post. Joshua Barnes saw an effort narrowly wide at the other end, before just shy of the hour mark, Trinity were forced into another change, when Dayle Southwell went down, off-the-ball. Under no pressure from anyone in amber and black. Helped from the field, the new dad had been enjoying a consistent run in the side, and looked visibly shaken.
Soon after his introduction, Southwell’s replacement, Javelle Clarke opened up the visiting defence with some neat footwork down the left. He picked out Howe, who spun on the ball, before crashing an effort off the crossbar. Howe again found himself in a shooting position shortly after, but his effort from the edge of the box saw Deeney comfortably able to save.
Tyrell Waite then headed over the top for Basford, before Preston looked to curl goalwards for the Blues. Jordan Helliwell then looked to get his name up in lights, but saw his tame shot dealt with by the visiting ‘keeper. On chances created, set pieces won… the only stat that disappointed was the result. Three real chances for the visitors, expertly dispatched. Basford’s ruthlessness in front of goal the difference between the sides on the night.
Fortunately for the Blues, there’s not long to wait to turn fortunes around, when Gainsborough host Stockton Town at the Kal Group Stadium.
